Class 10 is the first big board exam in a student's life. Many students feel anxious, but the exam becomes far more manageable with a clear plan and steady work. This guide gives a practical month-by-month approach that works for CBSE, ICSE and UP Board students. Please also check your own board's latest syllabus and exam pattern each year.
Start from day one, not from the last few months
The biggest mistake is to wait for the 'real' preparation to begin in December. A syllabus that is completed and revised steadily by February leaves time for practice papers and confidence building. Students who cram usually forget and panic.
April to September: learn each chapter properly
- Attend class regularly and make short notes in your own words.
- After each chapter, solve all textbook questions and some extra practice.
- Take a short chapter test every week or two.
- Mark weak topics in a separate list to return to.
October to December: first revision
- Revise every chapter once, quickly, using your notes.
- Start solving sample papers section by section.
- Practise diagrams (Science, Geography) and formulas (Maths, Physics) daily.
- Give a pre-board style test and study the mistakes.
January to February: practice under exam conditions
- Solve full previous-year and sample papers in the exact time limit.
- Check your own paper using the marking scheme.
- Revise weak topics again.
- Practise writing neatly and completely: step marks matter in Maths and Science.
March: final revision and calm
- Revise only your notes, formulas, diagrams and important questions.
- Do not start new topics in the last week.
- Sleep well and eat regular meals.
- Prepare your stationery and admit card a day before.
Subject-wise tips
- Maths: practise daily and write every step. Revise formulas weekly.
- Science: understand the ideas, practise diagrams, equations and numericals.
- Social Science: make timelines, maps and short notes, and practise long answers.
- English and Hindi: practise writing formats and read the literature texts carefully.
Take care of health and mind
Sleep, food, light exercise and a short break each day improve memory and concentration. Avoid comparing yourself with classmates. If you feel stressed, talk to a parent or teacher early.
Tips for parents
Give a quiet place to study, a regular routine and encouragement. Avoid pressure about ranks. Ask what help your child needs and respond calmly to a bad test. Your support matters more than any guide.
