Many parents have heard of Abacus classes but are unsure whether they genuinely help or are just a passing trend. This guide explains what Abacus training is, what it can and cannot do, the right age to start, and how to judge whether it suits your child.
What is Abacus and Mental Maths?
An abacus is a frame with rows of beads used for counting and calculating. In modern classes children first learn to move the beads to add, subtract, multiply and divide. After enough practice they learn to picture the abacus in their mind and move imaginary beads to calculate without any tool. This second stage is called Mental Maths or mental abacus.
How does Abacus help children?
- Faster and more accurate calculation: children become comfortable with numbers and make fewer careless mistakes.
- Better concentration: abacus practice needs full attention for a few minutes at a time, which trains focus.
- Stronger memory and visualisation: picturing beads is a form of mental imagery that exercises working memory.
- More confidence in Maths: children who calculate quickly are less afraid of Maths and more willing to try harder problems.
What Abacus does not do
It is important to be realistic. Abacus does not replace school Maths. School Maths includes concepts such as fractions, geometry, algebra and word problems that need separate teaching. Abacus supports school Maths by improving calculation speed and number sense, but a child still needs to learn the concepts in the syllabus. Also, results depend on regular practice. A child who attends classes but never practises will progress slowly.
What is the right age to start?
Most Abacus programmes suit children from about 6 to 14 years, roughly Class 1 to Class 8 or 9. Younger children need to be comfortable with numbers and able to sit for short sessions. Older children can also learn, though the main benefit for speed is greatest when the child is still building number sense.
How much practice is needed?
Around 10 to 15 minutes a day is enough for most children. Short, regular practice beats a long session once a week. Parents can help by timing simple worksheets and praising effort, not only speed.
How to know whether your child will enjoy it
Children who like puzzles, counting games and hands-on activities usually enjoy the abacus. If your child is anxious about Maths, a friendly, small-group class with patient teachers can turn Maths into a game. A demo class is the best test: watch whether your child is curious and relaxed.
Things to check before joining a class
- Is the teacher patient and experienced with young children?
- How many students are in each batch?
- How often are the classes, and is practice material provided?
- Is progress tracked clearly?
- Is the fee clear and fair?
